Fly the Vampire Bat

Recently I've been looking at the work of japanese artist Satoshi Okano who is best known for his work at SEGA more specifically Samba De Amigo, Billy Hatcher, and of course Sonic the Hedgehog. More specifically the art he made during the era in between the Sega Saturn and Sonic Adventure 1. One character he made while working at SEGA that stood out to me is Fly the Vampire Bat, a seemingly original character Mr. Okano made during the development of SA1. So like any artistic nerd would, I HAD to draw him! Adding my own personal touches too it without straying to far from the original design.

Artistic Crisis.

A bit of a more serious blog post but it's something I've been meaning to get off of my chest for a while.

I've been going through a bit of a crisis when it comes to my artwork, if there's something you need to know about me is that I'm a massive perfectionist, anything that looks off to me even if it's very minor I scrap it and leave it on the cutting room floor. Along with me feeling like I rush my work just to put it out there for people to give me grace and love when that's not helping my creative process.

It's why I rarely do stuff I wish to do, because I always wonder "Will this become popular or will It flop and I'll remain in obscurity." I never tend to break put of my comfort zone often and it causes me to play things WAY to safe, and it lead to things being stale. I wish I wasn't chicken and could break free and be able to experiment without feeling like I'm constantly being judged.

I want to draw stuff not just for you guys but for most importantly, me.

The Various Expressions of Mr. Wulf

So I realized that my expression game has been.. halted for the most part. So I decided to use one of my more toony characters Mr. Wulf himself! mostly using model sheets from stuff like Lupin the Third and Tom and Jerry. also with some of my additional touches to make it work in my current style.

Drawpile Doodles 1/?

So since I currently don't have the proper motivation to do full art pieces 24/7 as much as I used to have, I've resorted to simple doodles using Drawpile! It's honestly been a very useful as a digital sketchbook for me (especially since I don't really draw much in my actual sketchbook anymore haha). I normally post these on Bsky but it felt a bit unfair to not have some of them up on there so lemme share a few.

These first few were drawings from a live stream I did last Saturday (which you can check out the VOD here! I'll admit I did end up sounding a bit more quiet so you'll mostly only be able to hear my friends talking over me ^^;)

Next few were doodles I've drawn from yesterday and today, mostly Sonic related due to me wanting to make sure I didn't forget how I would draw the Sonic characters. along with a doodle of my friend Puck's fursona :D

And finally some late night doodles of Stitch and Reuben from the Lilo and Stitch series and Shadow the Hedgehog wearing a cool jacket, mostly inspired by Leon from Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts.

Not sure if I'll make this a recurring thing on this blog but if I feel like it I might.

Jigen the Tigger

So here's a pretty odd post, a while back I was looking for a photo to use on Discord and Bsky and remembered this one edit fellow artist Travis Bickerstaff made of Winnie the Pooh and friends dressed as the cast from Monkey Punch's Lupin the Third. The one that stood out to me the most was this one of Tigger dressed as Jigen Daisuke. 

Not too sure what drove me to this one specifically but I decided to make this my pfp.

Though that wouldn't be enough to satisfy me, I knew that eventually I would have to draw him so I whipped up a few sketches of Jigen Tigger, giving how this was my first time drawing Tigger and too a lesser extent Jigen I obviously had trouble getting it to work in my style, but eventually I managed to figure it out! 

Honestly very proud of how these came out, even if these were done mostly ironically haha.

Julius Katz

So out of boredom I decided to create a new toony character, Julius Katz! a blue kitty whom I take obvious inspiration from Felix the Cat and a more obscure star Julius the Cat (explaining why he's also named Julius haha) I also tried to add some Tezuka influence while he's a little bit more Anime/Manga influenced while still retaining the Rubberhose influence. I also drew him a love interest but I might dedicate more time working on her before I unleash her to the public (or you could check out her concept art on my Bluesky lol)

I also tried to make a lineless sketch and it came out pretty well! If I ever decide to draw him in Flash I might give him a more navy blue coloring, I feel like it would fit him more. Still proud how it looks, really shows off his cute factor

Tobi the Alien Model Sheet

So out of boredom and because I feel like he deserves one, I decided to whip up a model sheet for The Green Goober himself, Tobi the Alien! Mostly encase I (or someone who's more experienced) decide to model him in 3D, also so I can make sure things are semi-consistent whenever I draw him

Oswald: The Forgotten King

So here's something I've been meaning to do for quite a while haha, revamping my old Kingdom Hearts Oswald design, along with the Lucky Keyblade! Taking a lot more influence from how Mickey's outfit looks in Kingdom Hearts 2. with my own little touches to it ;)

Decided to make it lineless since I feel like it would fit something like this more. I did decide to keep his overalls as it would be a nice added detail to separate him from Mickey. Along with semi-simplifying his Keyblade, I might draw him with another one if I feel like doing so (aka whenever I know how to draw more complex Keyblades haha)

Mr.Wulf Sketches

Drew this yesterday but I forgot to post it, decided to draw my Wolf character again mostly expresssions. Giving how he's a more cartoony character (Mostly Disney influenced) I referenced character sheets of Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse when doodling him.

Tobi with a Korean Corn Dog

Apologies for the lack of posting from the past few days, my birthday was Wednesday and it made me get side tracked ^^;

Anyways, I felt like drawing a colored sketch of Tobi the Alien, since I haven't done that in a while, giving the green goober a corn dog! Korean style! Mostly due to me watching many videos on YouTube of Korean corn dogs being made. Who knows? Maybe I'll make my own someday!

SUPER SONIC!

So here's someone I haven't drawn in a hot minute, Super Sonic, Sonic the Hedgehog's Super Saiyan like form! I decided to return back to an old style I sorta abandoned, mostly in terms of shading and the background, giving it a very Y2k look, along with making it look sorta like album art.

(His name's Robo-Jars if you wanna draw some fanart for him, my birthday's next week and I'd love to see that ^^) I even drew myself drawing the green goober himself, Tobi!

Quick Bonkers Warmup

Felt like drawing one of my favorite Disney stars Bonkers D. Bobcat again! didn't really feel like making a full picture so I did a simple lineless half bod, honestly really proud of the output and it made me miss doing this sort of lineless style. Maybe I'll do it again sometime

Quick Honey the Cat Doodle

So here's an obscure one, Honey the Cat from Sonic the Fighters! I haven't played the game myself, but Honey always stuck out to me, mostly due to her being mostly an obscure Easter egg in a lesser known spin off game, that and her design always stuck out to me, being a sonic-afied version of Honey from Fighting Vipers. Might draw a full piece but for now have this little doodle I drew in my sketchbook

Homemade Pizza!

So on Fridays, normally me and my dearsome mother would go out and get pizza from Papa Murphy's but we decided make the pizza ourselves! My mom did the usual pepperoni while I did a sorta weird combination of bacon and green onions.

After countless minutes of preparation and letting the thing sit in the oven, the final result came out excellent, really tasted good and was great with chips haha

I'd probably do this again in the future whenever I get the chance too.

Happy Fall!

Had an idea for Tobi whenever I started making his comic series, greeting cards! Mostly seasonal greeting cards, I might draw ones for stuff like Christmas, Halloween, or Thanksgiving. Since it's fall I thought about drawing him simply walking though a bit of an Autumn area with leaves everywhere, and also giving him a Scarf! (it's blue to match his normal bow tie) I might make a fall related Tobi comic sometime, probably not this Saturday though ^^.

Quick Shadow Doodle

So for two days I was going through this little thing called an Art Block. Meaning I was unable to properly draw something due to me either being burnt out or me lacking motivation, thankfully it seems like that's done and over with and I did manage to draw two things (I won't share the other since I didn't ask to put it up on my blog) one of them being Shadow the Hedgehog! A character I haven't drawn in a hot minute, didn't feel like drawing something too dynamic and stuck with something a bit simple.

One thing I would probably change is the spine length and fixing the hand. other than that I'm very proud of the final result!

NiGHTS Keyblade Design

Almost forgot to post this here! But yeah a while ago I decided to draw up a NiGHTS inspired Keyblade called the NiGHT Sky, was my first time doing a more custom keyblade design, and I'm incredibly proud of it! Who knows? maybe I'll get hired to work on KH4! (yeah right)

Jars is back from vacation

Guess who's back from vacation!? THIS GUYYY!! Had a bunch of fun during my vacation, got the chance to go the beach, had some good food, hang out with family, and it felt great to get out of the house (and away from the internet for the most part haha)

Don't got much to show off other than a few photos I took, though they are some pretty snazzy photographs ;)

Anyhow.. things should be back to normal, kinda did loose the drive to draw so I need to get back into the mood again lol

Jars is going on vacation

Hey everyone, just letting you all know that I'm gonna be busy for the rest of the week, not working or anything but I'm going on... VACATION!! (With family) So I'm probably going to be unable to do work on stuff like Tobi the Alien, as I stated in the previous blog post. This'll also mean that I won't be as active online as I normally am. I'll be sure to share some cool photos during my time once I get back! That's all I really need to say. See you Sunday!

So I probably won't be able to work on the next Tobi comic this week (not that I have a proper idea for a comic to begin with) I'll explain why I'm unable to work on the next comic in tomorrow's blog post. So instead.. I'll share these doodles of the green goober I drew a few days ago but only came back to today, consisting of a little model sheet and two seasonal outfits, I might turn the two into holiday cards, especially the Christmas one.

Quick NiGHTS Sketch

I've been getting back into NiGHTS into Dreams recently after occasionally playing the steam version of the first game (which is unfortunately now delisted, thanks Sega >:P). So I decided to sketch up NiGHTS along with coloring most of their outfit and the red gem on their chest.

Finally finished the next Tobi comic! And with a new friend for the green dude too, Cooper! Nothing too too special, but it felt nice coming back to him and finally bringing Cooper into the comic.

Sketches! (3/?)

Been a while since I've done one of theses huh? Well I've been sketching a ton in my sketchbook again, so I thought I share a few of them here again, some are from August and early this month and one of them features two characters of mine I haven't mentioned on here yet (oops), named Fynn and Iris!

I'm really proud of the computers I drew, the giant robot isn't rly my favorite out of all of these, mostly because it looks too much like a buff guy in armor. That and huge giant detaled robots like those you'd see in Gundam, Evangelion, Transformers, etc. aren't really my forte ^^; (I dunno how they make them look good!)

Quick Tobi Animation Test

Still on that animation grind so I thought I'd animate one of my characters, and who else but Tobi! I've always wanted to animate the little guy so what better time to do it than now. I was gonna fully outline it but I decided to keep it the sketch layer

The Traditonal Bouncing Ball Animation Test

Long title I know, but I can't really describe this little animation test as anything but. Anyhow, I've been meaning to get back in the swing of animating, so I thought I'd start small with the obvious thing, a bouncing ball with some squash and stretch. Mostly made after rewatching Alan Becker's 12 Principles of Animation video series.

Clover in some New Outfits

Something I have missed doing for quite a while, drawing my cast of characters in different fits! And who better than to start with this come back is Clover! I've mostly been wanting to do this again since i've been getting into Bleach by Tite Kubo. He always drew the cast of that manga in casual outfits and it made me wanna do that again myself. One thing I decided to do for this piece and other art pieces I might impliment in the future is to make the base outline (The one before I add the bold outline) a bit thinner than how I usually do the outline.

Ricky Practice doodles

I've been thinking about my grumpy lil (yet chubby) raccoon dude Ricky! Mostly after me and a friend of mine talked about how he should sound like (I said he should sound like Vic Dibitetto). So I decided to doodle two drawings of Ricky along with me somewhat practicing the Line of Action, might dedicate a full sheet of paper too the Line of Action just for the extra practice haha.

Tobi Tidbit #1

Hey everybody! I'm currently a bit under the weather and I don't really have the motivation to work on Tobi the Alien. So Instead I'd share a bit of a fun fact about the green goober. Did you know that Tobi wasn't originally meant to be green? Yup! When I was creating him I originally wanted to make him Orange, mostly to match with the peach skin tone on his face and belly. I also wanted to give him the cartoony White gloves but I thought the more Chippendale white cuffs would work better. 

However I didn't really like the orange look, and went for green instead. A very common color for Aliens. Another thing I was gonna give him were nostrils but it made him look like a deformed Yoshi so I scrapped it. Thus the Tobi we know and love was born! And who knows? Maybe orange Tobi will make a come back! (Yeah right)

Dapper Wabbit

I haven't drawn my Rabbit sona JC in a while, mostly due to me being busy with other things and him not being in my mind for a while. So I decided to draw him in something I haven't drawn him in a while, a fancy tux and hat!

Sorta experimented with how I wanted to do the outline, really proud of it! I was gonna use Tobi but I felt like using my little robot persona, Robo-Jars! (Think of him as my very own Tori-Bot). If I feel like it, I might make the little Robo-Jars head I made for it my blogspot Icon ^^

Big The Cat!

It's been a while since I've last drawn one of (and plenty of many) my favorite Sonic characters, Big! He's a pretty dopey feline that I have a soft spot for, I mean anything purple will win me over haha. plus he always stood out since he doesn't look like how a Sonic character would look like. I sorta head canon him to be a stoner, like how people think Shaggy from Scooby Doo is one.

Jars T. Wulf, a semi brief history of my first Fursona

So if you know me, one of the first avatars that I have used to have online (besides my self) was a little wolf character, named Jars (one of my internet nicknames). I've had him for quite a while and he became the main host of my little review series on Youtube! (a series I still need to bring back, maybe when I decide to buy a new microphone) at the time he looked like this. (This isn't the first design, the closest one is probably this one)

a design that I'm frankly not proud of in retrospect (not just because the art is ass lol), you can tell I had no clue how to distinguish a wolf from a fox. I did try to give him a bit of a bit of a redesign back in May but that also looked a bit meh to me, It did introduce a part of him that I'm really proud I decided to keep, The baggy pants, heavily inspired by how artist, Stephen Silver draws him

But alas, it was not meant to be. as he would once again get sent into obscurity. Until yesterday, when at first I was thinking of just retiring the wolf lad only for me to get  a bright idea, giving him a new look and somewhat new clothes, making him look more like a sorta rubberhose/toony wolf than he did prior.

(Also due to me being so obsessed with Kingdom Hearts I drew a little doodle of what Mr.Wulf's get up would be, don't ask me to draw a Keyblade for him haha)

And because I felt like it, I opened up MS Paint and doodled two colored drawings to get his new palette down.

and that's Jars T. Wulf's history! not sure when I'll truly bring him back, but I'm at least proud I came up with a design that fits with my current vision ^^
